Youth and adults gathered to celebrate youth ministry on Nov. 15 at the third annual Witness the Spirit awards presentation, held at Mount St. Mary Academy in Kenmore. The evening saw people of all ages being recognized for the work and support of youth ministry.

Pope Benedict XVI announced on Feb. 11, 2013, that he will resign, effective Feb. 28, 2013. At Vatican City, he told a gathering of cardinals, "After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths due to an advanced age are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry. I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only by words and deeds but no less with prayer and suffering."

BALTIMORE - Bishop Richard J. Malone was elected chairman-elect of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops' Committee on Laity, Marriage, Family Life and Youth at the Fall General Assembly on Nov. 12. He was also re-elected to the board of Catholic Relief Services.

Soon we will go to the polls to cast our votes for the president and vice president of the United States, congressional representatives, and state and local officials. When exercising our voting rights, we are not only acting as good citizens. We are also putting our faith into concrete action. Catholics, by virtue of our baptism, are called to be salt to the earth and light to the world. We must not hide our light under a bushel basket, but rather courageously defend our moral principles and promote human dignity and the common good in the public square.

More than 1,000 people filled downtown Buffalo's St. Joseph Cathedral this afternoon as Bishop Richard J. Malone, a New England native, was installed as the 14th bishop of Buffalo.

With incense in the air and "Love Divine, All Loves Excelling" being sung, Bishop Richard J. Malone took his next steps towards becoming 14th bishop of Buffalo, presiding over Evening Prayer at St. Louis Church in downtown Buffalo on Aug. 9. More than 200 diocesan and religious order priests from Buffalo, Maine and Boston gave the bishop a sustained ovation as he made his way down the longest aisle in the Diocese of Buffalo.

Greeted by Bishop Edward U. Kmiec, the soon-to-be-retired leader of Catholics in Western New York, the incoming bishop of Buffalo, Bishop Richard J. Malone, arrived at Buffalo Niagara International Airport on Aug. 3, one week before his installation Mass at St. Joseph Cathedral.

The transition of the leadership of the Diocese of Buffalo is about to move into its next phase.

"It is with great joy and happiness to announce that Pope Benedict XVI has accepted my resignation and has appointed the Most. Rev. Richard J. Malone, bishop of Portland, Maine, as the new ordinary for the Diocese of Buffalo," said Bishop Edward U. Kmiec. "Bishop Malone is a colleague of mine in the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, and we have been acquainted over the years. He comes to Western New York with tremendous experience and a wonderful reputation for being a caring, pastoral bishop and a true shepherd to his people."
