Our Church today in the Diocese of Buffalo and throughout the United States is becoming more and more diverse every day. The diversity that we see in our city is gradually becoming the diversity that we will see in our suburbs. Are we ready to embrace these cultures? Are we ready to forgive some of the hurts that may have taken place so that together we can move forward in peace and harmony?

If we are not ready then we need to prepare ourselves through education, cultural dialogue, prayer and various lived experiences. We can build the vibrant Church of Buffalo. We can thank God for one of the greatest gifts given to us - diversity. It is our challenge to find unity in our diversity.

We are who we are today because of our lived experiences in our churches, our communities and our world. This is where it has brought us. Where we will be in the future depends on our thinking. In order for us to change the way things are, we need to change our thinking. To do this we must challenge ourselves to accept this beautiful gift of diversity.

There are some things we need to put in place in order to move forward in the building of a more welcoming and loving Church. Sometimes we will need to move beyond our comfort zone. Other times we will need to let go of some of the prejudices that our parents or society have given us. We may be asked to do something or to look at things differently. Just because something was always done one way doesn't mean it was the best way.

We can begin by providing educational as well as cultural experiences which opens the hearts and minds to the understanding of unity in diversity. We need to constantly challenge ourselves to make sure that our actions move toward building a more welcoming Church. We can achieve this through sharing our gifts of music, dance and food, and also through cross cultural dialogue. One way to dialogue is to form a book club which meets monthly to share a book they read on racism, cultural diversity, white privilege or cross cultural communication.
The new experiences will enable us to learn more about each other and come to understand some of the racial injustices that still exist in our diocese and in our world. God has the power of transforming the hurt of one person for the development and growth of another person. It is through this transformation that the person who is hurt is healed and both people can walk together stronger and can celebrate our unity in diversity.

How many different cultures exist in your parish? Are they all welcome in the planning of what happens in the parish and at liturgies?  Are they members in the various organizations that exist in the parish? Are they part of the decision making in the parish?

Let our prayer be, Thank you Lord for the gift of diversity. Send forth your Spirit of peace and love and strengthen us with the gifts of compassion and understanding so that we can appreciate all the gifts you have given us and all the gifts we see in each other. Amen!
