Private funeral arrangements and the opportunity for the general public to pay their respects to Bishop Edward U. Kmiec, 13th bishop of the Diocese of Buffalo who passed away late in the evening on July 11, 2020 are the following:

The general public will have the opportunity to pay respects on Thursday, July 16, 2020 between the hours of 12 noon and 7:00 p.m. when Bishop Kmiec's body will lie in state in the main sanctuary of the Cathedral of St. Joseph, 50 Franklin St, Buffalo, NY 14202.

Social distancing will be required, along with the wearing of face masks in order to reduce the risk of coronavirus infection.

A Diocesan Mass will take place at 7:00 p.m. but will be restricted to Bishop Kmiec's immediate family and Diocesan representatives only.

Due to the ongoing threat of the novel coronavirus and the required capacity limitations, the Mass of Christian Burial, scheduled for Friday, July 17, 2020 at 12 noon at St. Joseph Cathedral, will unfortunately not open to the public. The Mass will, however, be live-streamed at 12:00 PM.  To view the Mass of Christian Burial please click here.

The funeral liturgy is restricted to immediate family members of Bishop Kmiec and invited lay, clerical and religious representatives of the Diocese of Buffalo. Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan, Archbishop of New York, will preside at the Mass, with Most Reverend Edward B. Scharfenberger, Apostolic Administrator, as the principal celebrant. Other attending bishops from the New York region are expected. Entombment will follow in the Bishops Crypt, directly behind the tabernacle at St. Joseph Cathedral.

Flower arrangements are gratefully declined. Those wishing to offer a memorial may do so by making a gift to the following:  the Most Rev. Edward U.
