Father Paul F. Stengel, a retired diocesan priest, died Dec. 14, 2016, at Mercy Hospital in Buffalo. He was 84.

He was born Nov. 24, 1932, in Buffalo, to Carl J. and Anna (Overbeck) Stengel. He attended Diocesan Preparatory Seminary in Buffalo and White Fathers Seminary in Franklin, Pa., before furthering his education at White Fathers Seminary in Ottawa, Canada, and Christ the King Seminary in East Aurora. He also received a master's degree in mathematics education from the University of New Hampshire.

Father Stengel was ordained Feb. 21, 1959, at St. Joseph Cathedral in Buffalo, and shortly after he was assigned to serve in a missionary apostolate in Delevan. He served as a chaplain at a scout camp and as an assistant at St. Bartholomew Parish in Buffalo in 1960.

In 1961, he became a professor at Notre Dame High School in Batavia, concurrently serving at either St. Peter Parish in LeRoy, Our Lady of Good Counsel in Darien Center or St. Mary in Holley as a weekend assistant between the time period of 1961-1977.

In 1977, Father Stengel became pastor at St. Brendan Parish in Almond, where he also fulfilled duties as a campus minister at St. Jude Chapel at Alfred University. In 1991, he was made pastor of St. John the Baptist Parish in Boston, N.Y., and was appointed prelate of honor in 1993. He retired in 2001.

He is survived by a sister, Sister Carleen Marie Stengel, OSF, and a brother, James Stengel, M.D.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, Dec. 18, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Donald M. Demmerley Funeral Home, 21 Pierce Ave, Hamburg. Visitation will also take place at St. John the Baptist Church in Boston at 9 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 19, before the Mass of Christian Burial, celebrated by Bishop Richard J. Malone, which will begin at 10 a.m. St. John the Baptist Church is located at 6895 Boston Cross Road.
