Sister Eileen Barrett, OSF

Sister Eileen Barrett, whose teaching career spanned nearly six decades, died Feb.15, 2020, at Sisters of St. Francis Amherst. She was 89.  

Sister Eileen, formerly known as Sister M. Kevin, was born Sept. 20, 1930, to Francis and Mary Agnes Busch Barrett of Buffalo. She entered the Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity order in 1948, shortly after graduating from St. Ann School of Business in Buffalo. She professed her first vows Aug. 17, 1951, then her perpetual vows on Aug. 18, 1955, at Stella Niagara. She graduated from Rosary Hill (now Daemen) College in Amherst, in 1969.

Sister Eileen had a teaching career that lasted nearly 60 years. She taught at St. Anthony Hall, Warsaw beginning in 1951, and continued on to Our Lady of Lebanon School, Niagara Falls; St. Joseph School, Gowanda; St. Ann School, Buffalo; St. Joachim School, Buffalo; St. Lawrence School, Buffalo; and Kolbe Catholic Regional School, Cheektowaga. She briefly served as a housekeeper at St. Lawrence Rectory in Buffalo before becoming at teacher assistant at SS. Columba-Brigid Montessori School in Buffalo, a position she held from 1999-2009. She also taught in Columbus, Ohio, and Atlantic Highlands, N.J.

Sister Eileen is survived by her sister, Mary Theresa Daigler, and predeceased by her parents and siblings Jean Leising, Florence Barrett, Francis Barrett, Ann Kramer, John and Joseph Barrett.

A funeral Mass was held Feb. 18 at the Sisters' Chapel at Stella Niagara. Burial followed at St. Mary's Cemetery, Swormville.
