Sister Ruth Haselbauer, SSJ, 1934- 2018

Sister Ruth Haselbauer, a Sister of St. Joseph for 65 years and an administrator and faculty member at Medaille College for 35 years, died Nov. 19, 2018, at the Sisters of St. Joseph Residence in Clarence, after an extended illness. She was 84.                                     

The daughter of August and Marian (Logel) Haselbauer, Sister Ruth was born Oct. 15, 1934, in Buffalo. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph in September 1952 and pronounced her final vows in August 1960.

Sister completed both bachelor and master of science degrees in education from Mount St. Joseph Teachers (now Medaille) College in Buffalo. After several years of teaching in elementary schools, she studied at Syracuse University and then Pennsylvania State University, where she earned a Ph.D. in social sciences in 1983.

Formerly known as Sister Frances, Sister Ruth held multiple positions at Medaille College including director of Student Affairs, professor and chairperson of the Social Sciences department. She received the Dr. Brian Shero Teaching Excellence and Campus Leadership Award in 1998. She also served on her congregation's Leadership Team the 1985-93.

Moving to the Sisters Residence in Clarence in 2003, she served as coordinator for over a year.  

Sister Ruth is survived by her sister, Teresa Walkow, and her brother, Philip.

A funeral Mass was held Nov. 24 at the Sisters of St. Joseph Residence, with burial at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
