Sister Henrietta Schwagler, OSF, 1918-2016

Sister Henrietta Schwagler died March 28, 2016, at the Stella Niagara Health Center. She was 97.

The former Mary Ann Schwagler was born Aug. 29, 1918, in Buffalo, to Frank and Helen (Karis) Schwagler. She joined the Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity in Stella Niagara in 1936 and professed perpetual vows in 1941. She attended Mount St. Joseph Teachers' College, now Medaille College in Buffalo, and received a bachelor's degree in education and a master's degree.

Sister Henrietta began her teaching ministry in Columbus, Ohio in 1941, and taught at St. Lawrence School in Buffalo from 1943-44. One year later, she began serving as a teacher at St. Benedict School in Eggertsville from 1944-1949 until being named the school's principal. She was principal of St. Benedict from 1949-52 and 1968-72, between which she served as a teacher from Bishop McMahon High School in Buffalo from 1955-67 and again taught in Columbus before returning to serve as St. Benedict's principal.

She spent many of her years of ministry going back and forth between Buffalo and Columbus. After 1972, she served in several capacities at St. Luke Convalescent Center in Columbus and as a medical librarian at St. Ann Hospital in Westerville, Ohio, from 1984-1998. She lived in Columbus until 2008, when she returned home in 2008 to become a resident of the order's Stella Niagara Health Center.

Sister Henrietta is survived by several cousins.

A funeral Mass was held at the sisters' chapel in Stella Niagara, with burial in Stella Niagara Cemetery.
