Sister Sheila Lederer, RSM, 1935-2016

Sister Sheila L. Lederer died March 20, 2016, at the Mercy Convent Center Health Care Unit in Buffalo. She was 80 years old.

Also known as Sister M. James Aloysius, she was born April 20, 1935, in North Tonawanda, to John G. and Edris V. (Speck) Lederer. After graduating from high school, she began working in the field of health care and discovered the Sisters of Mercy at Kenmore Mercy Hospital. She joined the Sisters of Mercy in Buffalo in 1964 and began a three-year period of academic and spiritual formation.

Sister Sheila served in the sterile processing department and in radiology at Mercy Hospital in Buffalo and Kenmore Mercy Hospital. In addition to her 40 years serving in diocesan hospitals, Sister Sheila also assisted with the Helping Hearts Kids Club and was a Eucharistic minister. She was active in the St. Andrew Parish community in Kenmore, where she was a member of the choir.

She was the sister of Max D. (Mary Lillian), John F. (Mary Ellen), Pearl V. (Richard) Furmen, James R. (Patricia), George H., Robert W. (Deborah), Sandra L. (James) Hintanech, Loretta E. (Thomas) Hintanech, and Lawrence F. Lederer. She is also survived by nieces, nephews and their families.

A funeral Mass was held in the Mercy Center Chapel in Buffalo.
