Sister Mary Clement Schubert, OSF, 1931-2016

Sister Mary Clement Schubert died Feb. 25, 2016, at the Sisters of St. Francis Health Center in Stella Niagara, at age 84.

She was born on May 15, 1931, in Buffalo, to Clement and Leona (Keller) Schubert. She was baptized Estella and joined the Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity in Stella Niagara in 1950 and professed vows in 1953. Sister Mary Clement attended Rosary Hill, now Daemen College in Amherst, and received a bachelor's degree in education in 1959. She later received a master's degree in pastoral ministry and counseling from Boston College.

In 1953, Sister Mary Clement began serving as a nurses' aide at the Stella Niagara Health Center. She also taught at All Saints School and Sacred Heart Academy, both in Buffalo. She also served in outreach programs at St. Barnabas and St. Martha Parishes, both in Depew.

Outside of the Diocese of Buffalo, she taught at St. Mary in New Monmouth, N.J., and served as principal of St. Agnes School in Atlantic Highlands, also in New Jersey. Sister Mary Clement also served at St. Leo School in Columbus, Ohio.

In Rome, Italy, Sister Mary Clement was part of the General Secretariat at the Franciscan Generalate. She went to Africa to serve in Tanzania and Kenya, and served as an English tutor for sisters at the African Mission in Mahina Mwanza in Tanzania.

After retiring from teaching in 2011, Sister Mary Clement volunteered at St. Martha in Depew, where she led a grief support group and assisted with Communion services at the Maryvale Senior Complex in Cheektowaga. She also assisted the parish's St. Martha Travel Group.

She is survived by sisters Sister Agnes Lucille Schubert, OSF; Loretta (Richard) Shifferle; Frances (Norbert) Poorman; Annrose (Richard) Freeman and her siblings' families.

A funeral Mass was held at the sisters' chapel in Stella Niagara.
