Feb. 18 marked the beginning of Lent, which can be described as the period spent preparing for Easter. Lasting 40 days, it commemorates Jesus' time in the desert, where He fasted, prayed and was tempted by the devil.

In this edition of "Our Daily Bread," we visit host Father Paul D. Seil in his kitchen, preparing three meatless Lenten dishes while explaining this time of preparation.

"The season of Lent is a time when Catholics and many Christians enter into the reality of the life, death and resurrection Christ. We relive this Paschal Mystery in 40 days leading up to Easter," Father Seil explained. "Most people are familiar with Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday. Fat Tuesday officially takes place on the Tuesday, the night before Ash Wednesday."

"We fill ourselves with traditional foods in order to prepare ourselves for the fasting that comes with Lent. By freeing ourselves from material concerns, we can more fully think about Christ and what He did for us."

Tune in to "Our Daily Bread" on Saturday, March 14, at 5:30 a.m. and 12 noon on WKBW-TV, Channel 7 to hear more about the season of Lent from Father Seil, and remember to check the website for the recipe.
