Canisius High School announces the purchase of the Conners mansion at 1140 Delaware Avenue in Buffalo, directly across West Ferry Street from the Canisius campus. The newly-acquired 13,000 square foot facility was originally constructed as a private residence and recently served as a clubhouse for Gilda's Club of Western New York.

Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Buffalo will be in a better position to help students make healthier choices thanks to a $60,000 grant from Fidelis Care, a not for profit, faith based health insurance company. "They have been most generous," said Sister Carol Cimino, superintendent of Catholic Schools. "What we're trying to do with this particular grant is to change lifestyles and choices that children make."

On Fridays at Immaculate Conception School in East Aurora, teachers, faculty members and volunteers engage students in interactive learning and fun via its STREAM Academies. This includes a variety of age-appropriate and inventive activities that promote learning skills needed to excel in science, technology, religion, engineering, art and math in the Catholic elementary school.

EAST AURORA — Sister Mary McCarrick, OSF, diocesan director of Catholic Charities of Buffalo, will deliver the commencement address at Christ the King Seminary on Friday, May 12. The ceremony will be held in the St. John Vianney Chapel at the seminary, beginning at 7 p.m.

A $35,000 grant Villa Maria College recently received from the St. Francis Fund of Felician Services Inc., will be used to address the problems of access to a college education and persistence to graduation for low-income and at-risk students, with a focus on Buffalo's East Side and its large immigrant and refugee population.

HAMBURG — Hilbert College's first-ever Giving Day, a 24-hour online and telephone giving campaign, amassed 316 donors and more than $52,000 toward student scholarships on March 1.

ST. BONAVENTURE — St. Bonaventure University has hired a global expert in computer technology and security to direct its bachelor's degree program in cybersecurity.

This year, St. Mary School in Swormville will continue a parish tradition that enables both students and members of the community to participate in the Stations of the Cross while contributing to a cause. Fifth-graders at St. Mary's will participate in "Pray and Play," a live-action Stations of the Cross, at 7 p.m., Friday, April 7, at St. Mary's parish center gym, followed by a fundraiser for Catholic Charities.

The business of education merged with the business of, well, business at Mount St. Mary Academy, when the Kenmore high school opened its doors to teach middle-schoolers about entrepreneurship.

Teachers were informed on Wednesday afternoon and parents were told this evening that Mary Queen of Angels School in Cheektowaga will be closing at the end of this school year. The difficult decision was made by the school's Board of Trustees, a board of limited jurisdiction, which asked Bishop Richard J. Malone's permission to close the school.

STELLA NIAGARA — Stella Niagara Education Park announced its plans to further incorporate the innovative Outdoor Education Program that was created in 2015 to provide intentional outdoor experiences and infuse outdoor education into all areas of the curriculum. Building on an existing curriculum that utilized the 104-acre campus, the education committee of the school's board of directors created the Outdoor Education Program and hired Coleen Edwards as the coordinator.

A little bit of money is paying big, heartwarming dividends at the only Catholic school in Chautauqua County. "It's a huge blessing for a little school," said Beth Quattrone, a trustee for Northern Chautauqua Catholic School in Dunkirk, which received a grant from the Foundation of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Buffalo for the current school year.

Disadvantaged people across the country will benefit from the hobby of one young man from Hamburg. James Lyon, a junior at Canisius High School in Buffalo, has a passion for making one-decade rosaries, which he sold to raise funds to send himself and fellow students on a series of service immersion trips.

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY — It's that time of year again. For the 36th straight year, accounting students from Niagara University's College of Business Administration are providing free tax preparation assistance to members of the Niagara Falls community this tax season.

BUFFALO, NY - Students from 19 Catholic schools will attend the BPO's Feb. 8 Music For Youth programs, in Catholic Schools Day at the BPO. The program begins at 10:15 a.m. More than 1600 students are expected to attend this concert at Kleinhans Music Hall.

St. Mary Elementary School In Lancaster began its STREAM integration during the 2015-2016 school year. "Being a STREAM school takes a lot of planning, organization and professional development for the teachers. Last year, we were new to the program and we learned so much," said Becky Hoag, STREAM coordinator for St. Mary's. The school offers STREAM Academies to all students during the school day on Friday afternoons thanks to the support from principal, Kim Kwitowski. "I am very happy that we are a STREAM school. STREAM education is essential to the future of our children and helps to shape their everyday experiences," stated Kwitowski.

LEWISTON — During the past two months, science for students at St. Peter School has been focused on real research with real world ideas, working in two different areas of the living environment. Recently, students from grades four, five and six and their teachers were given an opportunity to work with volunteers from Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve in Cheektowaga on a project involving the Buffalo River.

Persistence pays off for Catholic schools - to the tune of $6 million. Advocacy from the NYS Catholic Conference State Coordinating Committee, Catholic school staff and parents has caused New York state to agree to modify the formula used to reimburse all state non-public schools for mandated services those schools provide.

On Jan. 30 and 31, Jonathan Shaw, an alumnus of Christ the King School in Snyder and filmmaker who has relocated to Hollywood, came to the Buffalo Museum of Science to speak with Catholic schools' seventh-grade students as part of the diocesan STREAM initiative. STREAM focuses on integrating the diverse fields of science, technology, religion, engineering, arts and math into the classroom setting.

SNYDER — At Christ the King School, students came together to help fellow students at Our Lady of Black Rock School in Buffalo in the weeks leading up to Christmas by collecting donations for the city students, many of whom are refugees in great need as the weather started getting colder.

This year's theme, "Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service," focuses on the important faith-building, academic and societal contributions provided by a Catholic education.

Trocaire's surgical technology program was recently congratulated by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting for achieving a 92 percent graduate pass rate of the Certified Surgical Technologist exam for Aug. 1, 2015-July 1, 2016. The organization bestowed its annual merit award upon the college as a result.

ST. BONAVENTURE — The sidewalk that runs between the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts and Butler Memorial Hall at St. Bonaventure University has a new design that pays tribute to the university's history.

The community of Western New York came together to celebrate Catholic education in the community at the largest annual diocesan fundraiser for needs-based tuition assistance on Jan. 19. Organized by the Foundation of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Buffalo, the 17th-annual GALA 22:6, formerly known as the Making a Difference Dinner, the event included a presentation of awards to individuals and organizations who have gone above and beyond.

The Foundation of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Buffalo will recognize Polly Lougen as the Sister Lucille Socciarelli/Father John Sturm Making a Difference Award recipient when it celebrates GALA 22:6 on Jan. 19. It will be held at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center in downtown Buffalo, beginning with a reception at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m.
