Students at St. Benedict School in Eggertsville celebrated Catholic Schools Week in late January in a unique way. Nancy Grant's religion classes created beautiful quilts, weaving a collaboration of art, religion and math.  Sixth, seventh and eighth graders each incorporated a different theme for their creations.

Sixth graders were challenged with choosing their favorite stories from the Old Testament. Some of the choices included Adam and Eve, Noah's Ark, and the Tower of Babel.  Seventh graders brought parables to life with their creations. The Mustard Seed, Hidden Treasure and The Pearl of Great Price were some of the parable examples set forth on their quilt. Finally, eighth graders incorporated the theme of Catholic Schools Week: Learn, Serve, Lead, Succeed.   Students created patches that reflected their interpretation of this year's theme. Some of their patches reflected visions of themselves in the future.

After students chose their story, they were tasked with measuring out their patches, cutting the squares, and creating colorful designs that reflected their interpretation of the stories. They later worked as a team in creating a grid pattern to display all the individual artwork.

"I was very proud of the way the children in each class came together to create their quilts," Grant said. "It was a great exhibition of teamwork."
