Bishop Richard J. Malone, bishop of Buffalo, will officially close the Jubilee Year of Mercy here in the Diocese of Buffalo, on Sunday, Nov. 6, with an evening prayer service at 4 p.m. at St. Joseph Cathedral, 50 Franklin St., Buffalo.  All are welcome.

In March 2015, Pope Francis declared the Jubilee of Mercy for Dec. 8, 2015 - Nov. 20, 2016, calling on Catholics to live out mercy through, for example, corporal or spiritual works of mercy - feed the hungry, visit the imprisoned, instruct the ignorant, pray for the living and the dead, etc.  Last December, Bishop Malone opened the "Door of Mercy," symbolizing the welcoming of all to the church, at the cathedral marking the beginning of the Jubilee Year of Mercy locally.

"Over the past year," Bishop Malone said, "the Holy Doors have been a source of mercy, grace and joy for countless pilgrims from our diocese and beyond."

Various churches from throughout the diocese also have Doors of Mercy.  Those include Our Lady of Victory Basilica, Lackawanna; St. Leo the Great, Amherst; St. Hyacinth, Blessed Mary Angela worship site, Dunkirk; St. Mary of the Angels, Olean; Our Lady of Mercy, LeRoy; and Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima, Youngstown.  Those doors will be closed during a eucharistic celebration in each location on Tuesday, Nov. 1.
