Msgr. Joseph A. Boruszewski died March 9, 2016. He was 89 years old.

He was born Aug. 26, 1926, in Buffalo, to Joseph and Apolonia (Olczak) Boruszewski. He attended St. Mary's College in Orchard Lake, Mich., before attending SS. Cyril and Methodius Seminary, also in Orchard Lake, and Our Lady of the Angels Seminary at Niagara University. He was ordained in 1953, at St. Joseph New Cathedral in Buffalo, by Bishop Joseph A. Burke.

In 1953, Msgr. Boruszewski served in a missionary apostolate at St. Mary Parish in East Arcade. In 1954, he was assigned to St. Adalbert in Buffalo as an assistant pastor, where he remained until 1958. That year, he became an assistant at SS. Peter and Paul in Jamestown until 1961, when he was transferred to St. Stanislaus in Buffalo that year and St. Bernard in Buffalo in 1962, where he stayed until 1963.

That year, Msgr. Boruszewski began serving as assistant director of Working Boys Home in Buffalo until 1965. He was assistant pastor of Holy Apostles SS. Peter and Paul in Buffalo from 1965-71.

His longest assignment was as pastor of St. Joseph in Varysburg, where he stayed from 1971 until 2001. During this time, he was named prelate of honor in 1993. He retired in 2001.

Msgr. Boruszewski was also a third-degree Knight of Columbus.

He is survived by nieces, nephews and their families.

Visitation will be held at the Daniel R. Smolarek Funeral Home, 2510 Union Road, Cheektowaga, from 5 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 12, and Sunday, March 13. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Bishop Richard J. Malone on Monday, March 14, at 1 p.m. at St. Andrew's Church, 34 Francis Avenue, Sloan. Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery in Cheektowaga.
