Sister Mary Sylvia Roma died Nov. 5, 2015, at Mercy Hospital in Buffalo. She was 76 years old.

She was born March 16, 1939, in South Buffalo, to Louis Anthony and Frances Agnes (Wazny) Roma.

After Sister Mary Sylvia graduated from West Seneca High School in 1957, she worked as a layperson for several years before joining the Sisters of Mercy in 1963, the year she professed her first vows.

She graduated from Medaille College in Buffalo in 1966, receiving a bachelor's degree in education. Sister Mary Sylvia went on to teach at diocesan elementary schools in South Buffalo, including St. Agatha, St. John Evangelist and St. Thomas Aquinas. She served as principal of St. Agatha for 10 years.

Sister Mary Sylvia also served in the Academic Learning Center at Trocaire College in Buffalo, where she assisted students with special needs, provided tutoring and helped with admissions.

She is survived by a sister, Dolores Lewis; a nephew, Anthony (Kari Marie), a niece, Christina Lewis, and her great-niece and great-nephew, Kaylin May and Parker Anthony.

A funeral Mass was held in Sister Mary Sylvia's memory on Nov. 11.
