Sister Maureen Dorr, OSF, 1830-2015

Sister Maureen Dorr died Oct. 1, 2015, in St. Elizabeth Motherhouse in Allegany. She was 80.

Mary Teresa Dorr was born June 27, 1930, in Fall River, Mass., to John G. and Bridget (Higgins) Dorr. She went to high school at St. Patrick School in Providence, R.I. and St. Elizabeth's in Allegany before joining the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany in 1949. She professed final vows in 1956.

Sister Maureen attended St. Elizabeth's Teachers' College, now part of St. Bonaventure University, Nazareth College in Rochester, Mount St. Scholastica College in Atchison, Kan., and Barry College in Miami, receiving a bachelor's degree in education in 1966. She went on to receive a master's degree in sacred doctrine from St. Mary's College in Notre Dame, Ind., in 1967.

Sister Maureen served as a principal and teacher at schools in several states, including St. John the Baptist in West Islip on Long Island as well as St. Anthony in Winston, Conn., Corpus Christi in Miami, St. Mary of Angels in Haddonsfield, N.J., and St. Francis in Triangle, Va. She served the Franciscan Sisters as a novice mistress, local minister, secretary to the area coordinator, area coordinator and regional councilor.

For 17 years, Sister Maureen served in Tampa, Fla., where she served poor and vulnerable populations at Trinity Café for 14 years before returning to Allegany in 2015.

She is survived by two sisters, Pauline Gage and Kathleen Mangan, and her siblings' families.

A funeral Mass was held in the chapel of St. Elizabeth Motherhouse, after which Sister Maureen was buried in St. Bonaventure Cemetery.
