Sister Arthur Wignerter, OSF, 1927-2015

Sister Arthur Wingerter died Sept. 10, 2015, in the Stella Niagara Health Center, at age 87.

The former Mary Gertrude was born Oct. 24, 1927, in Buffalo, to Leo and Della (Fischer) Wingerter. She went to the Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart in Eggertsville before receiving a bachelor's degree in education from Rosary Hill College, now Daemen College in Amherst.

She joined the Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity in Stella Niagara and began teaching at St. Ann School in Buffalo in 1949, also teaching at St. Benedict and St. Lawrence schools in Buffalo and St. Peter in Lewiston. Outside of the diocese, she taught at Sacred Heart Elementary, St. John School, St. Aloysius Academy and St. Rose School in Ohio, and St. Anthony School in West Virginia.

Sister Arthur retired in 2000. She lived at St. Benedict Convent in Buffalo and St. Mary's Apartments in Williamsville before moving to the Stella Niagara Health Center in 2008.

She is survived by two sisters, Rita Smith and Bernadette Wingerter.

A funeral Mass was held in the Sisters' Chapel in Stella Niagara, with burial in Stella Niagara Cemetery.
