Sister Mary Anne Brawley, DC, 1934-2015

Sister Mary Anne Brawley, a Daughter of Charity who attended school and briefly served in the Diocese of Buffalo, died June 6, 2015, at her home in Binghamton. She was 81 years old.

Mary Anne Brawley was born May 19, 1934, in Elizabeth, N.J, to Henry and Beatrice Brawley. She joined the Daughters of Charity in her hometown in 1955 and, in 1956, began teaching at Our Lady Queen of Peace School in Washington, D.C. She received a bachelor's degree from St. Joseph College in Emmitsburg, Md., in 1957 and a master's degree from St. John's University in Jamaica, N.Y., in 1966.

From 1970 to 1976, Sister Mary Anne served as the order's local superior in Endicott, where she also taught at Seton Catholic High School until 1976, after which she lived in Albany until 1978.

After this, she came to the Diocese of Buffalo to attend Canisius College in Buffalo, receiving a master's degree in education administration and supervision in 1979. She also ministered at nearby Sisters of Charity Hospital.

Sister Mary Anne served in her hometown of Elizabeth, as well as New York City and Albany, and was local superior in both Elizabeth and DePaul Provincial House in Albany, from 1979-1994.

From 1994-1998, Sister Mary Anne lived at Sacred Heart Residence in Cohoes and was then assigned to Clark House in Binghamton, where she served at Lourdes Hospital. For 14 years, she was chair of the hospital board and served as the order's local superior from 2005 until 2011.

In 2012, Sister Mary Anne was assigned to Sisters Residence in Buffalo, serving as local superior until 2014, when she returned to Binghamton, where she stayed until her death.

She is survived by a sister, Noreen (Jack) Bamford of Rhode Island, and nieces Colleen (Mark) Wamback, Patricia Bamford (Alin Bennett) and Elizabeth (Jeff) Elliott, also of Rhode Island.

Funeral Masses were held at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Binghamton and the chapel of DePaul House in Albany, after which Sister Mary Anne was buried in St. Agnes Cemetery in Menands.
