A few tips will keep Directory up to date

Since making its digital debut, the Catholic Directory has provided an updated list of the names, numbers and addresses of all things Catholic in the Diocese of Buffalo. The online version of the Directory can be viewed from computer, tablet or smartphones, making it convenient for people on the go. It can also be downloaded and saved, so it can be read when a Wi-Fi hotspot is nowhere to be found.

"I have spoken to people about the new format and comments have been overwhelmingly positive," said Gregg Prince, team leader for the Directory.

For the cubicle, the Office of Communications still printed a limited number of traditional paper copies in a format that can also be updated by the reader.

The Directory is being updated on a regular basis. On the first of the month the newest version will appear on the website. Click on the diocesan seal to view the Directory as one large document.

To print, scroll down the Directory's main page, below the seal, to find "Right-click on this link to save an alternate version of the Directory." This will take you to the print-friendly version. These pages are designed to be printed as a professional print house would, four pages back-to-back (two sided) horizontally on standard 8.5"x11" paper. The folded, punched sheets will fit in a standard three-ring binder for 5.5" by 8.5" pages.

The Directory team has received a number of calls from people having trouble printing the desired pages. Here are a few tips.

1) Save a copy of the print-friendly version to your desktop.
2) Print the Directory from Adobe Reader (which can be downloaded from the Directory website) with the following options selected: print All Pages or the desired set of four pages, check "Actual Size," check "Print on both sides of paper," check "Flip on short edge," check "Auto" or "Landscape" for Orientation.
3) Each sheet will have four pages, two per side to be folded in half.
4) Fold each sheet and punch holes on the folded side
5) Insert sheets in a standard three-ring binder for 5.5" by 8.5" pages

To print a complete Directory (when viewing in Adobe Reader): Be sure to choose "Booklet" under Page Sizing and Handling in the print dialogue as well as "Both Sides" in the Booklet subset dropdown menu.

Also make sure the orientation is set to "Portrait" and "Print in gray scale (black and white)" is checked to save ink. The pages can then be cut in half and folded over to create a booklet that will fit in a standard 3-ring binder for 5.5" by 8.5" pages.

Each month, a list of updated pages lets you know what pages to print out to keep your copy current. Users only need to print out the changed pages. If that seems like too much work, plenty of pages have been included in the Directory for notes or personalized updates.

Please note that the above settings and instructions are for using the PRINT DIALOGUE IN ADOBE READER. We recommend using these settings and NOT the default settings in your standard print dialogue/properties menu.

The Communications staff appreciates everyone who has emailed changes to the Directory, such as changes in parish staff, addresses and phone numbers. Parishes, schools and Catholic institutions can expect to see their pink and tan sheets this fall as the Directory will undergo its usual major updates for January 2015.
