LANCASTER — Lynn Tytka, a math teacher at St. Mary High School, has been named a "Math Hero," one of only two in New York state.

Raytheon Company in Waltham, Mass., recognized 32 teachers from 18 states as "Math Heroes" for their effective, innovative methods to promote student enthusiasm and achievement.

Nominated by students, parents and school administrators, these teachers are honored for using interactive and creative learning approaches to make math real and relatable for their students.

A teacher at St. Mary High School since 2005, Tytka has more than 20 years of teaching experience. Tytka presently teaches Advanced Placement Statistics, Algebra II/Trigonometry Honors & A-level, and Algebra II B at St. Mary's.

"Teaching at St. Mary's has been a blessing," Tytka said.  "I'm excited to be a recipient of this award, and to be able to use this grant to further enhance the learning of all our students.  St. Mary's has been a second home to me and my four children."

In her application for the award, Tytka explained how she has tried to be creative and enthusiastic about math to make learning more interesting, not boring and difficult.

She sings, dances, and stands on desks to make learning more fun, and, as a result, students are more successful.

"When you read the description of this prestigious award, Lynn Tytka immediately comes to mind," said Rebecca Kranz, principal of St. Mary High School. "Multitudes of our students over many years have considered her a math hero for the incredible amount of time she spends helping her students. Lynn is a 24-hour teacher. She doesn't stop at dismissal time.

"She is involved in numerous activities, and she makes herself available to help students morning, noon and night. The entire St. Mary's community is proud to have Lynn as part of our Lancer family and pleased that she was recognized by this national organization for the wonderful things she does every day."

Each Math Hero receives a $2,500 award and a matching grant for their school.
