Sister Mary Raymond Syjut, FSSJ (1926-2017)

Sister Mary Raymond Syjut, FSSJ, died Dec. 6, 2017, at Immaculate Conception Convent in Hamburg. She was 91.
The former Bernice Theresa Syjut was born Nov. 30, 1926, in Detroit, to Jacob and Mary (Marchewka) Syjut. After graduating from high school, she worked in a tool shop and managed a grocery store before becoming a postulant with the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph in 1960. She professed final vows in 1964.
Sister Raymond received a bachelor's degree in education from Medaille College in Buffalo, which led to a 45-year teaching ministry. She taught in Angola and Medina, as well as at schools in Bessemer, Ala., Westfield, Mass., and in her native Michigan. After she finished teaching, she continued to serve on a volunteer basis at Marycrest Manor in Livonia, Mich., before returning to the Buffalo area to live in the order's care community in 2017.
She is survived by a brother, Brian; a sister, Elizabeth; a sister-in-law, Christine, and her siblings' families.
A funeral Mass was held at Immaculate Conception Convent, after which Sister Raymond was buried in St. Hedwig Cemetery in Detroit.
