Sister Margaret Mahoney, OSF, 1921-2015

Sister Margaret Mahoney, of the Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity in Stella Niagara, died May 15, 2015, in the Stella Niagara Health Center in Lewiston. She was 94.

Sister Margaret was born Feb. 18, 1921, in Buffalo, to Jerome and Frances (Underlander) Mahoney. She received a bachelor of science degree in education from Mount St. Joseph Teachers College, now Medaille College, in Buffalo. She also received a master's degree from Fordham University in the Bronx.

She taught at Sacred Heart School in Charleston, W.Va., before continuing her ministry in Diocese of Buffalo schools, including Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart in Amherst, Bishop McMahon, St. Ann, St. Benedict and St. Joachim in Buffalo, St. Joseph in Gowanda and Stella Niagara in Lewiston.

In 1988, Sister Margaret began working with vulnerable populations in Buffalo, including impoverished and disabled individuals. She served people with AIDS and in pastoral care at Buffalo General Hospital. In 2004, she became a permanent resident of the Stella Niagara Health Center.

Sister Margaret is survived by nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass was held in the Sisters' Chapel in Stella Niagara, with burial in Stella Niagara Cemetery.
