St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute is proud to announce that senior Andrew Siaw-Asamoah was named a 2014-15 National Merit Achievement Scholarship winner. He will receive one of 7,600 National Merit Scholarships, worth approximately $33 million.

"Andrew is one of those rarest of young people an educator encounters," said Robert T. Scott, president of St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute.  "He is undoubtedly extremely intelligent, dedicated to inquiry rather than 'grades,' and views his future as putting his abilities and talent in service of others, especially those who are most marginalized.  More than an exceptional student, Andrew is an extraordinary young man."

Last year, the NMSC announced that Siaw-Asamoah was among 16,000 U.S. semifinalists who qualified to move forward in the competition. The semifinalist group was comprised of the highest scoring entrants in each state. Locally, 84 seniors from 19 high schools in Western New York and 17 in the Rochester area were named semifinalists.

Andrew will attend Yale University in the Fall.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the National Merit Achievement Scholarship Program, underwrites this financial award with its own funds. The program began in in 1955. Students enter the academic competition by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). The test serves as an initial screening of approximately 1.4 million entrants each year.
